@eliasraw I'm using Linux Mint Cinnamon, which a friend helped me install, and I'm finding it very user friendly and reliable. I just need the basic stuff too and it does all that well, and I think it's designed to be for people like me who aren't tech enthusiasts or even particularly comfortable with modern technology.

@fox omg yessss that's so great! Really delighted to hear that.

I just pulled out 'California Plant Families' by Glenn Keator cause it has a pretty good glossary, and it says a sepal is the outermost whorl of a flower, the calyx is the collective term for all the sepals, and a bract is any modified leaf associated with a flower (I've heard 'associated with the reproductive structures of the plant' as well) So I'm not super clear on if sepals can also be bracts? It seems like one of those things where sometimes there's a clear distinction (a sunflower's involucre of bracts surrounds the flower head, not each individual flower, so we can say they're not sepals pretty confidently I think) but for something like an oak flower it seems fuzzier where the whorls of the flower end and the involucre begins and the model we use to categorize things breaks down a little.
I feel like this is a very long winded way of me saying I don't really know haha

@fox You make such cool things and I'm so excited to see something I made become part of one of them! And I really love the former-pants sleeves on this

A few months ago I switched to linux mint (thanks again @0x4d6165 !) and switched from a smart phone to a flip phone. Both were great choices I would highly recommend and I can't imagine going back. There are inconveniences but they're far outweighed by the benefits for me. I've been particularly blown away by how much more mental capacity I have since ditching my iphone.

The process of shedding tech that's clearly harming me has also given me a far greater sense of agency, which feels really important as things get harder and we really have to rely on ourselves and each other, not tech companies.

Humans are amazing, capable animals. We can live beautiful meaningful lives without the mediation of corporate tech, and I think we have to take whatever steps towards that we can.

us pol/history, confederate surrender, textile art Happy confederate surrender day! Seems like a good time to share the work of Sonya Clark, who does a ton of amazing textile art including reproductions of the ultimate flag of the confederacy, a white linen dishtowel flown as a flag of surrender.

Computer struggles, input welcome @headclouded Yes I love Renew computers!! Going over there for some external storage is on my to-do list right now.
I ended up going with a refurbished Thinkpad from another source, which was like half the cost of the Mac screen assembly (not even including labor, wow.) I think it'll easily meet my fairly minimal computer needs and I'm feeling optimistic about getting Linux Mint on there. Which reminds me, I think you helped me install ubuntu on my laptop in like middle school, that was very cool of you and a nice memory, thank you.

us/international pol, trans and disability intersection, asylum @revoluciana I'd like to know what the impact intersections like disability can have on seeking asylum as a US trans person. I've heard many countries have restrictions on immigration for disabled people, but maybe those don't prevent someone seeking asylum?

Computer struggles, input welcome @0x4d6165 @fox I found a gen 1 T14 refurbished on eBay that was significantly more affordable for me than the screen repair and looks like it's got plenty of memory and storage for my needs, thank you so much for this tip. I'm gonna do some more research about linux mint and my printer

Computer struggles, input welcome @0x4d6165 Oh very cool that you can try them first! I'll look into that, maybe that would let me see if the printer thing is an issue?

Computer struggles, input welcome @0x4d6165 @fox Oh wow it looks like either of these thinkpads refubished would be cheaper than fixing my laptop. Thank you for these recommendations and the linux mint recommendation, this is all super helpful. If I go that direction I would really love your help!

Computer struggles, input welcome @fox That makes a lot of sense, and based on what I was seeing for prices for this repair other places I think that probably would be cheaper. And then the desktop in the garage is cheaper still, though a lot less convenient than a Thinkpad.

The thing I'm most worried about switching to linux is printer drivers tbh, and those things like your wifi issue. And just like, it would be taking on another project and I'm tired. Have you run into any issues printing with Pop OS?

Computer struggles, input welcome Some weeks ago I knocked a loom over next to my open laptop and got a crack in the lower right corner of the screen. The impact area is about 2”x2”, with an area of screen extending up from that that displays a lovely array of colors in vertical stripes, but nothing that was previously visible there. This was fine, I just resized my windows and carried on since the area horizontal to the crack was still working ok, and thats the area I actually need for opening programs.

Unfortunately, conditions have deteriorated and it looks like the bottom two inches of my screen are close to being pretty abstract lines full-time.

So I probably do actually need to do something about this. My options as I see them are:

1. Take the screen to someone to fix it.
Probably the most sensible option but the most expensive, and I think it’s likely I just can’t afford it

2. Switch to the desktop that’s somewhere in the garage and might still work? Or another unused desktop computer that’s around that I could maybe get some help switching to some kind of Linux. This is very appealing to me and kind of sounds like a nightmare, I’m not particularly comfortable tinkering with technology more modern than a jack loom.

3. No more computer, embrace my true Luddite nature. The option I most want to do but that is probably the least advisable. But wow do I dream of having no computer and no phone. I know I’m not ready to accept the trade offs that comes with though. Not yet at least.

Probably should just ask around about what the cheapest computer repair option is around here. It would be cool to make this the thing that gets me off an apple product/OS and onto some Linux/open source OS thing but I don’t know if there’s a Linux distro that’s easy enough for someone like me.

I’m weaving more black fabric, this time an angora/nylon blend at 24 epi in 2/2 twill. The warp is about 33 inches wide in the reed at 800 ends.

I’m weaving this fabric to make another reproduction of the Skjoldehamn hood, this time following the original construction and fabric structure more closely than I have previously. I love these hoods and I think everyone needs one, so I want to make lots to give as gifts

@fox yesss that's great! I really wish there was something like that here. I was looking at the bike kitchen in SF and it looks kinda similar? bikekitchen.org still not super close, and the hours aren't great with my schedule, but I'd like to check it out some time.

Can I ask you about how to clean and lubricate a bike chain some time? That's another thing I should do soon

@noodlemaz water and snacks mostly but I might use it to carry other stuff I want to have quick access to. Like maybe I could tuck a map into the pocket?

I sewed a stem bag for my bike and I'm really excited about it! It's my first time sewing one and I made up the pattern so I'm pretty delighted with how it came out.

I used bits of a bag I disassembled for parts, some fabric my mom gave me (the green turkey tail mushroom print fabric) and bands I wove.

There are some things I'll do differently next time, like probably making the bottom square instead of a circle, and making some slightly different fabric choices, like not waxing the lining and drawstring sleeve fabric. And maybe I'll add some ease to the pocket, which can't really fit anything when my water bottle is in there on this one.
