catholicism @0x4d6165 they're like pokemon, all have their own unique aesthetic and narrative, so the whole saint thing allows different locations and cultures to contribute their own saint, and a lot of folk tales involving saints pick up on local legends and fairy tales

racism, performativity etc. the reason people can't understand the complexity of opposing both zionism and anti-semitism, or correctly understanding lateral issues like homophobia in poc communities is because their outlooks are basically racist/fetishistic, they only have a superficial performative understanding of privileged and oppression ( one actively weaponized by reactionary propaganda ) which is all just a series of rhetorical manuevers to make sure people in power have clean hands, like after the cops kill a black kid and they have the 1 black sergeant give the press conference. It's all so many forms of tokenism that ultimately serves the power structure and is totally useless or dangerous after a certain point as it's an active weapon of oppression. But on a deeper level there's an implicit racism / prejudicial worldview that reduces people to mere categories rather than fleshed out human beings who are capable of both good and bad, people that can be empathized with and understood. It's a kind of reification of social distance than just reproduces these contingent historical categories as eternal

@smallpatatas

yeah, and it's even worse when talking about Telegram, even though he admits that T. is not encrypted, he still frames it as an attack on encryption, which is bizarre, also saying 'we don't know why the CEO was arrested" when we have a pretty good idea, it has to do with telegram execs being active participants in serious crimes still under investigation, CSAM and hatespeech is distributed publicly on Telegram, Durov can't say "well it's encrypted so how could I know" because it's not

This whole "sovereignty vs human rights"thing has been really fucking up my brain since i read it lol. So where does the interest of corporations and tech billionaires fit into this? it would seem that falls under 'human rights' (!), so this entire framing arbitrary puts tech CEO's and Corporations on the same side as end users, like favela dwelling brazillians, who are both having their
human rights challenged by the sovereignty of the state.

Consider the possibility that state regulation of megacorporations isn't just a matter of sovereignty but the state attempting to protect the human rights of it's citizens, from hate speech, election interference, CSAM etc. i You could also frame this as a clash of sovereignty, between Corporations and Governments, human rights being a non consideration of either side. Or Twitter being an American based corporation is necessarily an arm of US imperialism, so the argument Cory's making basically says any attempt at resistance on behalf of countries in global south against US tech firms is a threat to human rights!

Cory certainly wouldn't agree if you put it that way, this is just the danger of falling back on oversimplified cliches

@Mabande yeah the front-end philosophy of mastodon and other fedi instances is very much caught in this mode of wanting to emulate slick coroprate UI's, way to javascript heavy, bizarre choices like this, like on several platforms the alt text appears over the image even if it hasn't been requested, there's no reason to do this at all, you can just use the html title attribute which will show the alt text on hover, or you could have a 'view alt text' button below the image.

oh shit Paris Marx is on fedi? love his podcast

yeah i think Cory would be much better off putting his talents towards fiction instead of having an opinion on literally everything tech related... like this piece he's trying to put together this general framework for internet law and it's messy
When you put it this way, it's obvious that national sovereignty is important, but not as important as human rights, and when they come into conflict, we should side with human rights over sovereignty.
first i would say that, no, don't put it that way, if we're using 'human rights' in a casual way, it's hard to make an argument that someone has a human right to twitter access in fact twitter makes it very clear that they can arbitrary ban whoever they want and restrict public access, so it's not an issue of free speech at all, it's a restriction of a private platform for refusing to abide by the laws of the country.
