@jdp23 very cool, yeah if AT does manage to break away and become something independent of Bluesky i'll have to change my tune, we'll see
also no reason why a platform can't just support multiple protocols, hell RSS/Atom is just fine for a lot of cases, especially bots, Diaspora prot is janky but very wholesome communities on there i wish i could access here
and yeah the social dynamics of building and maintaining an open source project where talented people are willing to contributed their valuable skills for free is very complicated, i certainly don't have those social skills... in that other thread i was maybe a little unfair to furries, i hope no one took it personally, i think that community aspect is what drives a lot of foss projects so that's probably why these niches are over represented on fedi because these platforms have been built by and for their communties and that's beautiful
Thanks for telling me about Forte, apparrently Streams is "public domain software" as was explained by one dev, the name itself is just a placeholder, they just put it out there with the hopes other people would pick it up and run with it, which I guess is what Forte is, Mike's fork. When i get a VPS i'm seriously considering running an instance. I would prefer just a bare bones php nomad implementation along similar lines to activityphp that i could drop into my own MVC build on top of, but realistically, writing a new frontend for Forte or and maybe some addons would be save me a lot of work.
I know exactly what they were doing because i tried to do the exact same thing when i was 12, they wanted to make a symbol that was as compelling as a swastica but also not a swastica, because, ya know.... and well they failed lol
I like the chaos or nautical star which has 8 points, and apparrently has some precedent for use among anarchists
this is all very fascinating thank you. API's are the devil lol
I know there are many cool technical aspects of AT, but my position on it is strictly political and not technical: we can just make ActivityPub better or utilize another protocol like Zot in conjunction with AP, instead of encouraging developers to spend their valuable time working to improve Bluesky for free. I"m not against bridges and crossposting but beyond that, BS should pay devs if they want broad adoption.
I'm gonna spare you my conspiracy theories, but i'm convinced that Mastodon is by their actions, unnecessarily limiting the potential of what can be achieved by the fediverse (broadly speaking) in a way that benefits corporate platforms like threads and bluesky, i know the feature creature needs to be tamed so as not to derail the project but the fact Mastodon lags behind every other AP based platform feature-wise despite getting far more funding speaks volumes
The main reason i don't even use mastodon anymore is one minor feature: vanilla mast doesn't have any kind of custom markup, whereas missky variants have MFM, pleroma varients allow standard Markdown, BBCode and MFM, i'm not particularly good at programming but even I have written a regex based Mardown Parser, it's not hard, i just want to italicize text sometimes and embed links
Why limit ourselves to this Twitter clone model? Friendica, Hubzilla and Streams iirc all support location sharing, this has incredible potential, for example, it could provide a private alternative to dating app spyware, or create an alternative to Facebook Marketplace, imagine federated Craigslist, or even provide a means for local Taxi Drivers to compete with Uber/Lyft, it could also be used to organize protests in a private way, so many possibilities which lead to positive real world changes.
I think Streams has a lot of potential but certainly needs some polishing in terms of frontend, my ideal would be an interface similar to misskey (their webdav based user "drive" should be a standard feature) , but with Zot backend that is also compatible with Lemmy forums. I can dream at least 🙏
fascism@voidandnil@Mondobizarrro you know i used to draw that 9 pointed star in my notebook at a kid and think 'yeah this is a cool new star i invented' nazis ruin everything
but yeah just the goofy-est little pedophile wannabe mass shooter cult around, luckily they are like attomwaffen in that they're so fucked up and evil that even other fascists want nothing to do with them... but still a serious thread since extrordinary circumstances like idk a US civil war could lead to them gaining traction in the way IS did in Syria
ever notice that every time someone starts suggesting a feature that would improve #Mastodon like quote boosts or reply controls there's a big ole freakout?
@jdp23 wow what a shit-show, yeah all that blocklist drama sounds very familiar, i bet KF took a lot of the things they learned playing fedi instances against each other and applied it to BS, and that goes to show if you do not remove the cancer of fascism immediately it will spread until it kills the host.
and yeah Eugene is just a problem, Mastodon team for years were promoting this idea that post controls were "impossible" with ActiviyPub which is obviously wrong, and there's a number of ways one can do it, just because something isn't in the spec doesn't mean anything, the spec is just a guideline, then there are things that are in the spec like Groups which Mastodon refuses to even talk about. I'm a big fan of the Zot protocol developed by Hubzilla as it both works with Activipub and handles things that are outside of the AP spec, like identity migration, privacy controls etc. It seems to answer a lot of the problems that AT claims to fix but is actually a decentralized foss project and not just vc vaporware. Problem is there isn't a formal Zot specification, and they seem to have very little funding, and a lot of young developers have a weird disdain for Php 😒
Why limit yourself Mastodon? There are lots of Federated platforms that are objectively better, Sharkey, Akkoma, Friendica, even Diaspora and Hubzilla, all have incredible strengths over threads and bluesky
@jdp23 i think it probably has a bit to do with how BS markets itself, exactly to liberal professionals as the new twit, social networking as PR, and right wingers just don't know about BS or have no reason to leave twitter which obvs gives them better reach...
And to be fair there is still a large right wing presence on the fediverse, but the way moderation works you can completely cut them off from your network, if bluesky ever implements actual federation this will cause problems, if small instances are incapable of fully moderating their own instances.
@jdp23 well, i would say it is easier to block mute users on bluesky because it's a centralized platform, despite the rhetoric, everyone right now is on the main instance so when you block them it's network wide rather than on mastodon, where an adversary can harass you from infinite new instances/accounts, the concept of labelers is cool, seems to be just like a subscribeable filter / list system, amazing that mastodon doesn't have that yet, i know there are PR's on this, misskeys "Antenna" feature is pretty similar to a labeler, but tbh i think mastodon developement has basically stagnated
@dramypsyd at some point invite only forums might become more widespread, and this would be cool, like secret cyberpunk virtual cafes that you gotta know a guy to get into
so it turns out #Bluesky does not moderate hate speech at all, it allows you to mute nazis via "labels", but takes no moderation action against them at all, this creates the illusion of a safe space while actually facilitating the spread of hate-speech, misinformation and other fucked up shit. No wonder there's no much right wing money behind bluesky.
yeah that's completely unacceptable to me, i was on the fence until i learned this, honestly some black mirror shit that it's being sold as a place that's a safe for minorities while being designed to faciliate hate speech, CSAM etc. it's obvious to me this is very intentional and not just a problem that more moderation will solve... of course they will have to take down some CSAM for legal reasons, but damn they might just get raided by the feds doing that, they don't have the clout Elon does to get away with being a CSAM hub on the clearnet
the labeling thing seems cool ngl, but it sounds just like a 'list' or 'filter' that other people can subscribe to, shouldn't be that much of a leap to make that happen on fedi, i think you can already do that with iceshrimp antennas
@puppygirlhornypost2@fen@BathysphereHat i see exactly why free speech crypto bros invested in bluesky now, that's some evil genius shit, SO lefties can have their safe space while nazis operate unimpeded, jesus fucking christ
that sounds very similar to how Lists and Filters work, also Antennas in Misskey...
Wait so, their "moderation" system doesn't take down posts that are labeled hate speech etc.? It just hides the hate speech from people who don't want to see it? So publishers of hate speech are allowed to publish hate speech to people who want to consume it,, or who just haven't subscribed to the anti-hate-speech labeler, it just "mutes" them. Is this correct? Surely they have another system of user reports right? Because otherwise I would not consider this "moderation" at all, that is just a filter which clearly enables bad actors to disseminate harmful content.
