In 1644, the German Adam Schall went tothe new Q¯ıng rulers and presented his cal-
culations for an upcoming solar eclipse. He
challenged the Chinese and the Muslim as-
tronomers in the Bureau, and the Jesuits’
calculations were best. Schall was appointed
director of the Bureau. The next year, he
formulated the current rules for the Chinese
calendar.
