on featuring posts from remote users, there should really be some research on that, i imagine there's a few ways to do this that could result in more or less bandwidth. Like let's the fetching is all done client side, and is only done explicitly when the user requests 'more comments' flood limits could be implemented to prevent abuse, that would be better than just auto retrieving, i hope that's how those current plugins work lol

on the question of relays and such, personally i think this is just inevitable in the long run, there also doesn't have to be one canonical relay, could have a variety of relays that admins opt-in to, this could have other benefits like for example, allowing small instances to piggy back off of large instance, giving them a larger view of global network.

I've of the opinion that fed devs are a bit too caught up on the limitations of AP as such, there are many ways that servers on a network can communicate beyond AP to get around these limitations ( i might be wrong but iirc webfinger, which is essential for all fedi instances i'm aware of is just one way of retrieving user information )
