@azalea maybe it's because they think HK's situation is uniquely dire which, it wasn't then, it might be nowidk
also a lot of the protesters associated themselves with the american conservatives (and still do) so that explains a lot
the thing that's more difficult to explain is why that association happened in the first place, is it just a "right place at the right time" thing or that many already had right-wing ideas
it's probably both
