@cwebber yeah it's literally just one big server and so they have the reasources to take on millions of users in a week, also easier when there's a single point of entry, unlike having to search for an instance, which already assumes one has a solid knowledge of not only how the fediverse works but which servers are cool and which to avoid, which for me at least took a couple years of trail and error

if I come to your house, and you have a guitar, I'm just gonna play the guitar the whole time, I know this is considered rude, and in all honestly you probably just have the guitar there as decoration, more or less, I don't care, I can't not play it, so you better hide that shit.

@u2764 makes an important point about fedi being used as a platform to recruit impressionable white men into right wing radicalization pipelines, this is a huge issue, personally i have signed up to seemingly nice generic looking instance only to find it's full of nazis, I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I think one way to combat this is formal "confederations" or "unions" or"webrings" or whatever you want to call them, in practice just a list of instances who all agree to same moderation standards and share values, there can be variety of these non-mutually exclusive confederations with different emphasies, furry confederation, hacker confederations, radical bipoc confederations etc.these already exist
informally but these opt in instance lists would make it much easier for new users to find a home.

This isn't a new idea, this is how the old BBS communities organized themselves, I believe they were called "federations" (let's brainstorm some new words lol ) Of course all that would require instance admins to put their petting differences aside and pretend to be adults for 5 mnutes, not hopeful.

As to the current tools available, in the Mastodon webb interface if you go to /deck/explore/suggestions --> People, it will give you an automated list of suggested users based on popular users that people you follow follow, and i think if you're new it gives you suggestions based on popular accounts followed by local users ( i vaguely remember something like that, but mast has updated these features a few times )

MIsskey variants have a 'recommended users' feature that is curated by the admin, tho this is rarely used, and i don't think it suports categories -- mastodon might already have something similar not sure, either way if starter packs are curated on an instance level than they does limit the dangers of using that as a harassment vector, because then the local instance by hosting a starter pack would be accountable for hosting hate speech etc. there would be immediate feedback within local instance.

as was pointed out by someone else one can just write up a csv file that has a list of users that can be imported and shared around, tho this could be abused, people shouldn't just important random csv's from sources they don't trust, i wrote just such a list for a girlfriend when she joined fedi - I don't think this is particularly a technical problem, it's more just finding a group of active and popular people and getting their permission to put them on a list. Tho if there was some kind of automated process in the interface where people get a notification asking them if they consent to be added and a browseable userlist would be the ideal. allowing someone on the list to 'opt-out' automatically would be ideal also, since the people on the list themselves could be targeted, tho i think if such starter packs are curated locally (rather than globally available) that would help mitigate that risk

@LukefromDC damn, i vaguely remember there being specific constitutional rules against that type of situation, not that it matters, also not clear why they would need to do that if they have the feds / US military

So there's a fair case to be made that this text is the first written gospel and all other gospels derive from this one, and if there was historic Jesus this is basically the closet impression we get from his original doctrine.

it's interesting because there is no narrative it's basically the raw sayings of Jesus and so we get a sense of the rich metaphors that he used, I did not copy and paste the more famous of his sayings, most of these I think are omitted from mark and later, gospels, you can also see why this text was considered apocrypha, because a lot of these quotes are out or give hints at culty behavior, like lots of references to nudity and drinking

Gospel of Thomas, favorite lines (2) Jesus said, "Let him who seeks continue seeking until he finds. When he finds, he will become troubled. When he becomes troubled, he will be astonished, and he will rule over the All."

(5) Jesus said, "Recognize what is in your sight, and that which is hidden from you will become plain to you . For there is nothing hidden which will not become manifest."

(6) His disciples questioned him and said to him, "Do you want us to fast? How shall we pray? Shall we give alms? What diet shall we observe?"
Jesus said, "Do not tell lies, and do not do what you hate, for all things are plain in the sight of heaven. For nothing hidden will not become manifest, and nothing covered will remain without being uncovered."

(39) Jesus said, "The pharisees and the scribes have taken the keys of knowledge (gnosis) and hidden them. They themselves have not entered, nor have they allowed to enter those who wish to. You, however, be as wise as serpents and as innocent as doves."

(41) Jesus said, "Whoever has something in his hand will receive more, and whoever has nothing will be deprived of even the little he has."

(42) Jesus said, "Become passers-by."

(45) Jesus said, "Grapes are not harvested from thorns, nor are figs gathered from thistles, for they do not produce fruit. A good man brings forth good from his storehouse; an evil man brings forth evil things from his evil storehouse, which is in his heart, and says evil things. For out of the abundance of the heart he brings forth evil things."

(68) Jesus said, "Blessed are you when you are hated and persecuted. Wherever you have been persecuted they will find no place."

(69) Jesus said, "Blessed are they who have been persecuted within themselves. It is they who have truly come to know the father. Blessed are the hungry, for the belly of him who desires will be filled."

(98) Jesus said, "The kingdom of the father is like a certain man who wanted to kill a powerful man. In his own house he drew his sword and stuck it into the wall in order to find out whether his hand could carry through. Then he slew the powerful man."

(113) His disciples said to him, "When will the kingdom come?"
<Jesus said,> "It will not come by waiting for it. It will not be a matter of saying 'here it is' or 'there it is.' Rather, the kingdom of the father is spread out upon the earth, and men do not see it.

Kyle, the school called, have you been committing hate crimes again?

Kyle: It was an accident Mom I swear! Let me explain! My IRB was acting up and there was a rope there and I just couldn't help it!

Mom:
wags finger That's it. No more video games after 10pm, I'm serious.

Kyle: Oh come on! What the hell Mom?

Mom: Kyle! Language! Go to your Room!

Kyle storms upstairs as Mom sits down at the dinner table holds her head in her hands for a moment then Looks at the Camera

Raising a White Boy into a White Man can be tough. Especially if they struggle with Institutional Racial Bias or I.R.B. In this video . . . .

and basically all of these reformist ngo anti racist organizations take for granted the assumptions of white innocence.

"Oh wow I had no idea black people are disproportionately arrested and imprisoned. Well this must be "institutionalized racism" yes it's very subtle, we're trying to best to get rid of it, we certainly didn't design our entire criminal justice system specifically to fuck over black people"

The greatest lie white people ever told is that they are unaware of when they're being racist. As if white supremacy happened by accident and had no malicious intent behind it.

uspol election thoughts you should Biden being a compulsive fondler of women and children in public maybe contributed a little to the election?

I think Kamala maybe gets a little too much blame when Biden was Running until the last 3 months, millions of voters didn't even know Biden dropped it, the circumstances being Kamala getting the nomination are obscure even to someone like me who follows the news compulsively
