Hello! I’m Lichen. I use he/him pronouns. My special interests are mycology and textiles and I love sharing both. I also love many other facets of natural history and craft.

I'm located on the west coast of the US

I believe a better world is possible. My lived experience is that moments of it can already happen, and I’m committed to keep helping make as many of those moments as I can.

stuff’s really hard but plants are still here and it’s a good time to do a little harvesting, start more seeds of what I want to grow and tend the soil. And I wove some more shoe laces.

More band weaving, now double-faced tablet/card weaving with text and symbols.

Thinking a lot about how all I really want is to make nice little things and give them away and participate in consensus decision making about things that impact me and give and receive care. I'm in good shape on making things and giving and receiving care I think, or at least taking concrete action based on that daily. Distributing what I make via gift economy is a work in progress. Maybe a little free textiles shop could be implemented? And unfortunately the spaces I spend my time in are not ones where I'm an equal participant in decision making so I'm not sure if that's something that could happen in those spaces or if that's a thing that would require seeking out/making new spaces.

@KnittingMittens yay thank you for letting me know about the alt text!

And that’s fantastic, you could make a really special dog collar! Thinking about it makes me want to make one too, thank you for the inspiration!

@louisa_ thank you so much!

I wouldn’t feel comfortable using Miwok designs and imagery since I am not Miwok. The context of colonialism and making relationships and connection to land does influence how I approach weaving a lot, but I’m not sure how visible that is in the items I produce

Weaving bands is something I come back to pretty regularly. Recently it's been in the context of loosely recreating ancient weaving practices like warp weighted weaving.

Here are some card woven bands I've made, I think arranged in the order I made them, with the earliest example on the left and most recent on the right.

I love how card weaving makes elaborate patterning possible while creating a dense and consistent band. It can also be used to weave bands with text, which is what I have on the band loom right now.

I use this process as part of setting up the warp weighted loom, and I also just find bands very useful to have around and fun to make into things or to wrap gifts with.

Also, I'm hoping that adding a caption to an image gives it that as alt-text? If not and someone wants to correct me on this I'd appreciate it, I'd like to be adding alt text to images properly
